Go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage and see if a W10
recovery image is available. Back up all files stored locally and do a wipe and
reimage. See if you still have issues.

My surface pro 3 updated to windows 8 pro, some years ago and after that is not updating any further and the other problem about windows update is while this service is enabled my surface overheats and causes shutdown due to fast battery drain, So I disabled Windows update altogether, My first question is if Surface pro 3 updating to Windows 10 freely and how to fix overheating problem while windows update service is enabled (I also tried refreshing windows 8 but after refreshing overheats again), Also I tried to check for updates manually using a button in settings and it is spinning forever.
Thank you.

I am going to download "Surface Pro 3 - 128GB - Windows 10 Version 1511", Can it be used to recover a Windows 8.1 Pro?
You can use that image and it will install Windows 10 build 1511, then you can update to the current version. If you want Windows 8.1, you should download the other image shown. My advice is to get the Windows 10 recovery image.
