Surface Pro 8 interface with Elgato Video Capture external device

I am trying to use my Surface Pro 8 with 1tb system to perform a USB video capture from an external camera via an Elgato Video Capture device. Ultimately, I would like to capture and save the videos onto my hard drive from this old camera. Every time I plug in the Elgato via the USB port it states the device exceeds the power limits of its hub port. Is the Surface Pro 8 driver not fast enough to accommodate? Have any alternate suggestions of getting these old digital camcorder tapes digitized using my Surface?

    Hi Bonnie Topczewski,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community.

We would like to ask and confirm some details first for us to better understand the issue and concern. You have the Elgato Video Capture link connected directly to the USB-C port of the Surface Pro 8 then the old camera connected to the Elgato Video Capture, correct? and you want to take video and save to the Surface while connected to this set up?

May I know the exact model of the Elgato Video Capture that you have and also the old camera?

It is possible that the Surface USB port power supplied is not enough to run the hardware setup (Elgato Video capture and camera) connected to the USB-C port or the drivers are outdated.

Can you please try doing this set up while the Surface is also connected to its power supply then see if it still shows the error?

Try also running these steps below to make sure that the Surface has all the updated drivers needed. Check also with the OEM of the other hardware that we are using (Elgato and the old camera) if an updated driver is available for Windows 11.

    1: Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com)

    2: Check for Windows Update

Go to Windows Settings > Update & Security and select Check for updates

Make sure all updates need are installed including Optional updates

    3: Update drivers and firmware

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going to Settings > System > About

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro

Then click the link next to Surface Pro 8 then click Download on the next page.

Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.

After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

4: Run System File Checker Tool

See: Using System File Checker in Windows (microsoft.com)

    Kind regards,

    Marrion
