start menu constantly pops up

I have had a Surface Pro 3 since last Sept. A couple of months ago the start menu started popping up randomly (and frequently). It happens without or without the keyboard attached and it doesn't matter what program I am using at the time of occurrence.  I am not hitting the Windows button. How can I solve this very annoying issue?

    Hello Pat,

Thank you for the update. I am glad you did find a solution to the issue.

You can also always try the refresh anytime you feel the issue appears again as I am sure it will resolve it once and for all.

Thanks again for stopping by and we hope you have a wonderful rest of your week.

    Hello pnullmeyer,

Thanks for stopping by the Community Forum. Sorry to hear about the troubles you're experiencing with your device. Rest assured, we'll do our best to help.

You've stated in your post that the start menu appears on the screen with or without any accessories attached to it or anyone pressing on the windows logo.

While I am not sure exactly what's causing it, I'd suggest trying "refreshing" your Surface.

Refreshing Surface re-installs Windows and keeps your personal files, settings, apps that came installed on your Surface and those that you've installed from the Windows Store.

You’ll need to re-install desktop apps from the websites or from the discs that you used to install those apps.

More info can be found here.

Please give that a try and definitely keep us posted.

Thank you for your suggestion. My computer expertise is limited so I have not tried what you suggested - I will need to have a computer expert do this for me and have not had time to get it done yet.

When I googled my problem, several people suggested this could be caused by a virus. i have scanned my computer and it shows no viruses but some people said the scan should be done while in Safe Mode. I cannot figure out how to get my computer in Safe Mode. Can you tell me how to do this?

Also, I understand the next version of Windows is being released in April. Am I eligible for a free upgrade?  I bought my computer last September.

    Pat
