It usually takes a whole month from the date you return an item to the date your account is credited with the money, and it depends on its condition upon return if you are eligible for a full refund, a partial refund, or none at all: for example letting liquids get into the device by accident.
Disappointed with the return process at Microsoft
I received a surface pro 7 on May 20th and decided not to keep it, so I initiate the return on the same day. The laptop was shipped on May 21st and delivered back to Microsoft on May 29th (with proof from UPS). And there are zero updates afterward.
After multiple contacts with Microsoft through chat and phone, they finally escalated on June 10th and promised it would be resolved quickly. I checked with phone support on June 12th regarding the status. Still nothing...and the representative promised me to call me back on June 15th. I received zero phone call on that day.
Today, I called them again and were notified there were zero updates from their "escalation" team. They asked me to try it again tomorrow since tomorrow is the "deadline" to process the escalated case. I felt I am being pushed around with this, and nobody is trying help. This is genuinely a disappointment, and I would not purchase anything from Microsoft store from now on.

2020-06-16T19:28:19+00:00 To be clear, the computer was returned on the second day when the device is received. On Microsoft's page, it says
"When you make a qualifying return, we'll credit the full amount, less the original shipping and handling charges. Refunds are generally processed within 3–5 business days after we receive your item and find it eligible for a return. Refunds are applied to the original payment option."
I received zero updates (I'm not talking about getting refund to my credit card) after it physically delivered on May 29th. There is no liquid damage since it was not even used!
