surface go 3 type cover

Question

After spending "hours" working with Microsoft Tech regarding my surface type cover function keys not performing the functions, Microsoft sent a replacement cover. I hope it is a replacement. They charged my credit card $116.99 but indicated I would only get $83.99 credit. I have a hard time understanding this.

Anyway the new type cover was delivered today and is doing the same thing.

As an example I hold down the function key and press F1. That is supposed to turn on keyboard backlight. However, it starts Edge.

Can anyone help with this.? This is weird. If I press the control key, the function keys work.

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry to hear about this issue on your type cover.

Technically, for Surface Go Type Covers, try pressing the Fn then it would lock and unlock the function keys. A light appears on the Fn keys when the keys are locked into function mode.

If I may ask, does your type cover layout look like the photo below?

May I also know what version of Windows your device has?

No, my cover does not look like that. The function keys are different. Here is what I mean:

F1 Shows as backlight

F2 Shows as mute

F3 Shows as decrease volume

F4 Shows as increase volume

F5 Shows as play/pause

F6 Shows as decrease screen brightness

F7 Shows as increase screen brightness

F8 - F12 are the same as your photo. This replacement cover is the same layout that was on first one that Microsoft tech said was defective.

I am also having a major issue with the store. I paid $83.99 for this cover with my military discount. When I ordered the replacement they charged me $116.99 and indicated I would only receive credit for $83.99. I am furious over this.

Thanks. Maybe you are correct as far as the type of cover I should have, but mine is different as explained in my last post. This is the cover Microsoft sold me. Today I went to a Best Buy in Dover, DE. They had a Surface Go 3 on display with a type cover like mine (different color, but Function Keys were like mine.

Here are the steps I took:

1. Unattached their keyboard
2. Attached my keyboard
3. Started the Surface
4. Tried the Fn key with the F1 button (supposed to turn on the keyboard backlight)
5. That did ot work.
6. I tried the F1 key with the Ctrl key.
7. That worked.
8. I detached my keyboard and reattached their keyboard
9. I performed the same steps with the same result.

Either the Microsoft documentation is incorrect, or they have a problem with the Surface Go 3 interfacing with this keyboard.

If you shop at Amazon and look for a Surface Go 3 type cover, they will show you one like your photo. However, as you get ready to check out, you are informed there is a updated keyboard. This one has the keys configured like mine.

Microsoft should get their act together and fix the Surface or the documentation.

Just to confirm, is the Fn key turned on when you test the Function keys?

May we have a photo of your type cover instead?

Please also take note that if Fn key is turned ON, and you will press F1 it will do the brightness function. On the other hand, if it's OFF and you hold down the F1 it will normally open the Edge browser.

And when it comes to Ctrl key functions, if Fn key is OFF, and you will press Ctrl key + F1 it will do the brightness functions as well. But if Fn is ON, and you will press Ctrl key + F1 nothing would happen.
