    Hi, SydMR!

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We are sorry to learn that you have issues with the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter failing to connect or pair. We appreciate the time you have given to inform us about this, and I am here to help you with the troubleshooting steps.

Plug adapter and update its firmware:

Please ensure to plug the adapter into an HDMI port on your HDTV, monitor, or projector and into a USB charging port. The adapter gets its power through the USB charging port. Also make sure to keep your device within 23 feet of the external display/monitor.

Use the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter app to update the firmware. For more info, see Update the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter

    Check for Windows Update:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates

You may need to restart your device after the updates have installed.

Check your HDMI and USB connections

Make sure both the HDMI end and USB end of the adapter are connected correctly.

    • Make sure the HDMI end of the adapter is connected to the HDMI port on your HDTV, monitor, or projector. Use the included HDMI extension cable if needed.
    • Make sure the USB end of the adapter is plugged into a USB power source.

    Restart the adapter

    1. Remove the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter from the TV or monitor.
    2. Restart your device.
    3. Re-insert the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter into your TV or monitor.
    4. Attempt to display one more time.

We hope this helps you out, we highly encourage you to inform our Community by clicking on Yes or marking my post as an answer. This will help other members who may have the same issue as you. Otherwise, don't hesitate to update us so we can further assist you.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Janette_Z

Thanks for the suggestions. It was exactly after I updated the MS Wireless Display Adapter firmware that cause the problem.

I have reset the adapter, remove and re-install a few drivers in Surface, and the MS support team have been in communication with me for the past 2 weeks. The issue is on-going. My 5 year-old desktop PC and a 2-month old laptop can connect to the adapter without a hitch.

Thank you for your suggestions, though.

    Kind regards

    SydMR

    Hi there, SydMR!

We are really sorry if this happened. This is not the experience we want you to have. May we know if you tried the adapter on to another TV/monitor? This way, we can isolate the issue if it has something to do with the adapter itself.

    Thanks a lot!

    Regards,

    Janette_Z

I have exactly the same problem. My laptop connects but my Surface says paring with <my surface> failed, and it won't connect.
