My harddrive is overheating and is making disturbing noises while trying to write

I bought my laptop 1.5 year ago and since 3 weeks, my laptop started to do some extremely loud noises. I downloaded HWinfo to see what was happening on my laptop and by the harddrive category it showed that the harddrive was overheating and that the noises were always made when it started reading. The noise lasted for about 5-10 seconds and then, the harddrive would shut itself down. After this I'd shut down the whole laptop and restart it, but the noises always starts again and again. What is happening to the harddrive and is there any Microsoft repair center where I can go to?

    Thanks for confirming, R.S_8005.

Noises like grinding, whining or ticking are abnormal and this is usually related to a hardware component problem. I'd suggest to contact our Microsoft assisted support at Contact Us Microsoft Support to help diagnose the issue more. You can also contact them at Global Customer Service phone numbers (microsoft.com) underFor Business users. This also works with Home users, just select Surfacethen Homeas a type of user in the IVR prompt.

I hope this answers your concern. It would also be helpful if you let our Community know by marking my post as an answer. This helps others who may have the same concern as you.

    Best regards,

    StevenK

    Hello R.S_8005,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community. I'm sorry to hear about this issue on the device. I understand how concerning it is. I'll do my best to help.

If I may ask, did your device automatically shut down when it get overheat? Regarding the noises, did it happen to sound like grinding, whining, or ticking?

For the heating issue on the device, Surface devices adhere to all laws and guidelines related to temperature and thermal. You can refer to public information on adherence at Safety Information . See the sections called “Heat related concerns” and “Heat related concerns for wearable devices” to know more about how to handle heating issue.

Let me know how it goes.

    I'll wait for your response.

    Regards,

    StevenK

    Hello StevenK,
The device did not automatically shut down when it overheats, it is the HDD that is making noises while overheating. To answer your question, it sounded like grinding. After this grinding noise that lasts around 5-10 seconds, the HDD would shut itself down and would restart right after.

Hope this would help you further

    Regards,
    R.S
