Surface pro 9 making quiet electronic buzzing and whining when closed

I have had this surface since October and have never noticed this sound before. I keep it right next to my bed, so it is very unlikely it's existed already and I haven't noticed it.

I have the keyboard and pen, and upon folding it up and the surface turning off, it started making an electronic buzzing sound occasionally interrupted by an electronic whine. the sound appears to be coming from around the top left, near the power button, volume buttons, and usb-c ports. while the noises are faint, the high-pitched whine is very noticeable and very annoying. it seems to be random, too. with the sound going away after a few seconds and randomly coming back for another few. I also noticed that if I open the surface while it is making the sound, the moment the screen turns on it goes away. it is then replaced by an *extremely* faint constant buzzing that I can only hear when I hold it directly next to my ear, which is likely not a problem and just normal. the buzzing and whine while it is off, while faint, is quite noticeable in a quiet room.

and it would seem that in the time it took to type this it has completely stopped making the noise. just to test I opened and closed it and the sound has started again.

is this something I should be concerned about? since it seems to go away on its own, I don't want to go through a lot of trouble to get it to stop unless it could be something damaging to the surface. is it just an audible by-product of it keeping track of data and turning off properly?

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are experiencing an electronic buzzing and whining sound coming from your Surface Pro 9 when it is closed. I can imagine how concerning this can be, but I will do my best to assist you.

Based on the information you have provided; it is possible that the sound you are hearing is caused by the Surface Pro 9's power management system. This system is designed to conserve power and protect the device from damage by shutting down certain components when the device is not in use. The fan noise is normal and expected behavior, but it should not sound like there is something broken.

For more information, see Fan behavior and fan noise in a Surface device - Microsoft Support.

If the sound is particularly loud or persistent, we recommend reaching out our live support team so they can help diagnose the issue and determine if any repairs or replacements are necessary. You may reach them by following the instructions below.
