Surface Pro 3 I2C HID Device not functioning (touchscreen)

My touchscreen right now does not work at all, I get error code 10 when looking at the device and also the phrase "A request for the HID descriptor failed."

I have tried disabling/enabling the device, reinstalling the drivers, reinstalling touchscreen firmware, refreshing, and restoring my surface all to no avail.

I am trying to avoid having to factory reset though I may try that if nothing else works. Also, could this be a hardware issue as opposed to firmware/drivers?

Thanks in advance~

Any suggestions?

    Hello DavidLandsberger,

Try doing a refresh, as per the guide here. Let us know if it makes any difference. If it does not, try the reset listed in the same guide.

Please let us know if either of those work for you.

    Best Wishes,

    Zack_T

    Hi Tet_,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reach out to the Surface Community. I am sorry to hear about your experience with the touchscreen. I will try my best to help resolve the issue with you.

    • Is your device completely up to date? Having auto update enabled doesn't necessarily mean that your device is up to date. I would recommend manually checking for any pending updates by going into Control Panel>Update history>Check for updates.

How long have you had this problem?

    • Could you please clarify where exactly you see the error code 10 error message and "A request for the HID descriptor failed"?
    • Do you have a Cover attached? If so, are you able to use the touchpad of the Cover and navigate the screen?

If your device has all of the updates installed, considering the fact that you have even tried a refresh, you may want to consider performing a hard reset. Please see the article on how to do so.

I am not the original poster, but I have exactly the same problem as the original poster with my surface pro 3.  The touch screen does not work at all.  In the device manager, there is an I2C HUD device with an error (Host Controller 9C62).  Looking into properties for the I2C HUD device in the general tab I see the error "This Device Cannot Start (Code 10).  A request for the HUD descriptor failed."

My machine is completely up to date.  New updates were installed this evening.

When cover is attached, the keyboard and mouse work fine.

The problem is new for me as of this evening.

I have tried the two-button start and deleting and redecting the I2C HUD device.  No luck with either of these.  I have not tried to do a refresh.  Is it time to reinstall windows?  Or am I having a hardware failure?

    Thank you for your help.

I tried the refresh and it seemed to work for about an hour.  Then the touch screen failed again, as it was before.  I then tried to reset the surface.  The device was completely wiped but still doesn't recognize the touch screen.

I assume this means that I have a hardware fault and need a warranty repair.

Is that right?  What do I do next?

    David
