When I connect my keyboard to the surface 4 it shuts down, but as a tablet it works fine. Please help. Not sure how I can fix this or do I need a new keyboard. Although it’s an old laptop I haven’t used it for a long time.

    Hi K T P,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry for the trouble this has caused you. Let me help you on this.

You may run these steps to troubleshoot the issue and see if it helps:

Force the device to shut down and restart.

Press and hold down the power button until your Surface shuts down and restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.

Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check for Windows updates including optional updates if available.

See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com)

To check for updates: Go to Settings >> Update and Security >> Windows updates >> Check for updates.

    Uninstall the Display driver

Open Device Manager >> expand Display adapter >> right click on the display driver and select Uninstall. If ask to permanently delete the driver, just leave the box uncheck and select Uninstall >> then restart your Surface.

Reset your Surface using a USB recovery drive

See Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface - Microsoft Support.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia
