SP7 - SD Card Randomly Ejects itself

We have 2 SP7 devices where the SD cards just randomly eject themselves. It is a huge pain. In fact, when we bought our SP7 devices in Dec. 2019, it was such a problem that after attempting to fix it, the Microsoft store exchanged the devices. Yah, didn't fix the problem.

I've tried to be patient, waiting for a software and/or driver update that fixes the problem, but no joy. We've changed the brand of SD cards we use, and have done the usual "run the surface diagnostic tool" and windows update, but the problem persists.

SD cards are 256 GB and are the type/brand that Microsoft recommends in the Microsoft store. They are formatted NTFS.

Anyone else have this issue? Any recommended fixes?

Apparently the SP3 had a big problem with the SD card randomly ejecting itself. Well, the bug is back in the SP7.

    Hi Jeff Ranck (JRanck)"),

Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community. We're sorry for the inconvenience this has  caused you.

When you say, "the SD card randomly ejects itself, is this literally getting ejected from the SD card slot or just being unmounted and keeps displaying that it is ready to be ejected? This could be a compatibility issue. To initially assist you on this, it would be best if you can check this link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4495650/surface-what-sd-cards-are-compatible [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4495650/surface-what-sd-cards-are-compatible](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4495650/surface-what-sd-cards-are-compatible) so you would know what a Micro-SD card should be capable to  make it work on your Surface device.

You are right. It does not physically eject itself. It unmounts itself and becomes inaccessible until you physically eject it and reinsert it.

Our SD cards are the requirements on the page you point to. SDXC with UHS-I write speed.

Oh and we've tried two different manufacturer's cards that meet the SDXC UHS-I specs, so I am virtually certain that it isn't anything in the card. Between the two machines, we've tried four different cards from two different manufacturers.

More info about the unmount. It does not unmount and display that it is ready to be ejected. It simply unmounts and "disappears" from the system. In other words, if you have a finder window open that displays a directory on the card when it unmounts, the finder window closes. Any files you have open that are stored on the card remain open, but cannot be saved or perform any action that requires disk access. After the drive unmounts, it does not show up anywhere in the system or give any indication that the system previously had the card mounted.

    Hi Jeff Ranck (JRanck)"),

Thanks for your reply and I'm sorry for the delayed response.

In this case, to check whether the issue is related to SD card driver (software related), it's best to resetthe device back to default settings and re-update it. If the issue persists after the reset, this could mean that there's something wrong with the SD card slot itself and the best resolution I can suggest is to get a replacement for the unit.
