Windows 11 Pro - Handwriting Panel Not Passing Input to Field

I have a Surface Pro 7+ and a surface pen with Windows 11 Pro running. The handwriting panel comes up as it is supposed to and recognizes my handwriting appropriately, but it does not transfer the recognized handwriting into the application.

I've tried a handful of applications (onenote, word, notepad) as well as native W11 input fields. The direct entry feature works for windows fields and some apps (W11 search fields, notepad, etc.) but it does not work through the handwriting panel.

Any thoughts?

    Hello arooster2022,

Thank you so much for posting in Microsoft Community.

I appreciate you raising this concern and I understand that you're having issues with your Surface Pro handwriting panel. You got me here; we'll definitely sort this out together. Allow me to ask a question:

    • is this working before when your Surface is still in Windows 10?

Here are things you can do to isolate the issue:

    1. try not to use a pen but instead use your finger and see if it works.
    2. try to unpair/pair the Surface pen.
    3. Force device to restart by pressing and holding the power button for 20 seconds and release once Windows Logo appears on screen.
    4. Check for updates.
    5. Download drivers and firmware: Download Surface Pro 7+ Drivers and Firmware. from Official Microsoft Download Center
    6. Check if the handwriting panel is set up correctly. You can do this by going to Start > Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting > Use your handwriting to enter text
    7. If the above steps don’t work, try resetting the handwriting panel. You can do this by going to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Microsoft Pen and Windows Ink > Advanced options > Reset

Please let me know if this works.

    Regards,

    Rolando S.

Hi. I have the same issue, I noticed though that under the bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink, the Shell Handwriting always notifies me to "restart your PC to apply these changes" and no matter how many times I restart, it still shows the same notification. Any thoughts on this?

We're are experiencing the same issue with a Lenovo yoga laptop with win 11 and office 365 using a Lenovo active pen 2.

The pen works fine on a different Lenovo laptop (X1) running win10 and office 2016.

I'm also having the same issue with the Lenovo YOGA laptop with Windows 11 and Office 365.

The issue started on the most recent system update. Before this update, the handwriting to text functionality using the handwriting panel worked perfectly fine.
