Why does my surface pro 9 screen keep freezing and making a buzzing noise?

This has happened to me twice. I would be using my computer as per normal doing work and listening to music and all of a sudden a very loud buzzing noise starts. The first time the noise was short and an error message appeared on my screen for a split second (I didn't have time to screenshot or read what it said) then it went black and restarted. This time my screen froze and the buzzing noise went on for a longer time. I tried to hold down the power button as an attempt to restart the computer and stop the noise but it didn't work. I let it be for about another minute or 2 then did the same thing. This time it power off. I waited 10 minutes before turning on the computer again and it is working as per normal for now.

Is there a reason this keeps happening? Should I be bringing it in to the shop to get it looked at?

    Hello ARIKEN,

Thank you so much for posting in Microsoft Community.

I do appreciate you raising this concern and I totally understand that you are having issues with your Surface Pro 9 keeps freezing and making buzzing noises. You got me here; we'll definitely sort this out together. Before anything else, allow me to ask some questions:

    • When you said you've heard a buzzing noise, is it somehow a "fan noise" or it's a different noise?
    • Have you seen a blue screen when it restarts or pops-up the error?

If any case, you've heard a fan noise to your Surface, your Surface Pro 9's fan is designed to intentionally adjust its fan speed to stabilize the temperature of the CPU so that it works as expected while things are running in the background, resulting in noise, especially since Surface Pro 9 is a new device and there are a lot of tasks to be done, such as syncing and updates in the background.

On the other hand, if your Surface keeps freezing and restarting, and creating a noise not from the fan, you can try these troubleshooting steps below:

    1. Check Windows Update by going to Settings >> Windows Update >> Install available updates >> Restart to apply changes.
    2. Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Apps
    3. Download Drivers and Firmware. If your Surface has an Intel based processor, click this link: Download Surface Pro 9 with Intel Processor Drivers and Firmware. from Official Microsoft Download Center.
    4. If any case, the issue still persist to happen after troubleshooting, there might be a need for us to do a clean installation. This wipes out everything from the Surface and will reinstall a new operating system. For you to be able to do this, you need to use a flash drive that has 16gb or 32gb only. To see the full steps, please visit this link: Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface - Microsoft Support

Before bringing this to a shop, please try to do the steps above, this might help to prevent the issue from coming back.

Please let me know if this improves the performance of your Surface. Hopefully this helps!

    Kind regards,

    Rolando S.
