Microsoft Surface is locked up and unresponsive

My Microsoft Surface is on and completely locked up and unresponsive.  I have tried everything to shut it down but it won't respond to any command.  Even the Power button on the top left corner gets no response.  What can I do?

    We suggest plugging in the charger and press the power button until the screen is off to check if the issue is resolved.
