May I know what the make and model of your small check scanner?
Have you tried contacting the scanner manufacturer? Usually, a driver needs to be installed on the device when we encounter this kind of issue. When you plugged in the scanner, try to open Device Manager then check if there is a USB driver that shows an error. If yes, try to right-click on it then choose Update driver. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
