Can I use a USB-C/HDMI cable to an external monitor?

I have a Surface pro 7 and a docking station. The docking station connecting cable seems to be breaking down and it has me wondering if I can successfully use a USB-C to HDMI cable to connect the Surface to my external monitor and have audio and video work? I'd rather have a direct connection than use a dongle/adapter if it's possible.
