Surface RT blurry sound with headphones

I've had my Surface RT 32GB for almost 9 months, it is running Windows RT 8.1 with all the latest updates.

PROBLEM: Since mid Feb 2014, the sound through headphones is blurry and quality is poor. Vocals are distorted and the general composition of music sounds like it is underwater. This issue occurs with any audio or video source.

— I've tried several pairs of headphones and the issue remains.

— I've also uninstalled all Windows Updates from Feb 2014 and the issue remains.

— I've tried streaming media from the Internet via the web browser and the issue remains.

— I've tried playing local media and the issue remains.

The speakers on the actual Surface RT tablet are fine.

Does anyone else have this issue?

I, too, had the same issue with distorted sound when using headphones.  After a lengthy convoy with support in which they were not able to resolve my problem, I figured out a solution which worked for me.  Maybe it could help you, too.

First, I disabled any sound enhancements from within the Control Panel.  This was the Bass Boost, etc.

Settings - Control panel - Hardware & Sound - Sound- Headphones- Properties- Enhancements - Disable Enhancements -Apply

    Then, I balanced my sound

    Settings - Control panel - Hardware & Sound - Sound - Headphones - Properties - Levels - Balance (I set mine at a 93/29 ratio)

Fixed the problem!! 😉😉.  Good Luck!

    Hello 000ABC,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the headphones on your Surface RT.

Here is a list of troubleshooting steps for audio problems.  Please notice that a couple steps are for Pros or Pro 2s only.  If possible, I would also recommend testing your audio with a pair of bluetooth headphones.  You may be able to work around the issue that way.

Please let us know what you do to address this problem and the results.

    Best Wishes,

    Zack_T
