HDMI audio only works after reboot

I have a Samsung tv. When i connect this to my Surface Pro 4 via HDMI, the image appears but i have to reboot the surface to get audio.

I've updated all drivers and run a Windows update but no luck resolving this.

If the Surface can function as a tablet, it should "just work" when attaching to an external device, right?

Any solution to this besides having to reboot every time i connect HDMI?

I am finding this as well.

It didn't used to have this problem so I guess some updates have caused it. I'm still on pre-anniversary update due to other issues with the anniversary update but I would be extremely surprised if the anniversary update improves this issue.

I find that sometimes I have to reboot more than once before the audio playback devices even list the TV never mind select it as the playback device to use. I've tried with both a Samsung and a Toshiba TV.

Also, if I disconnect and then reconnect the cable even just a few minutes later I often have to reboot again. It's pretty rubbish and I'm starting to get sick of the poor quality of Windows 10 generally, lots of bugs being introduced and not many fixes.

Because this is an audio issue if you have the anniversary issue installed the following fix may work for you:

I tried this and it didnt work. still needs a reboot.

As this was needed ASAP for my parents going on holidays, I ended up buying a samsung android tablet and HDMI adapter for them.

I couldnt give them the surface as its just not fit for purpose unless the user is tech savy.

Could have saved about 1200 euros by just buying a cheap windows laptop and an android tablet last year instead of the surface.

    Hi Winston,

Are you still experiencing this issue?

I have been experiencing this issue for a long time and would also like to know how to fix it. It is very tiresome to reboot every time and find every program that I had opened.
