    Hi Tom,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

If your Surface Laptop 4 is overheating while charging, this can be due to several reasons. Here's a step-by-step guide to help diagnose and possibly resolve the issue:

    1. Force a shutdown and restart your Surface: Force a shutdown and restart your Surface - Microsoft Support
    2. Use a Hard, Flat Surface: When charging, place your Surface Laptop 4 on a hard, flat surface to allow for proper airflow. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like beds or couches, which can block the vents and cause overheating.
    3. Limit Intensive Tasks While Charging: Performing resource-heavy tasks like gaming, video editing, or running multiple applications while charging can cause the device to overheat. Try limiting these activities until the device is fully charged.
    4. Monitor Background Processes: High CPU usage from background processes can cause overheating. Use Task Manager to identify and close any unnecessary processes:
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Go to the Processes tab and check for any processes using high CPU resources.
    1. Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Support

If any of these steps resolve the issue or if you notice something specific during your troubleshooting, let me know, and I can assist further!

    Your Sincerely

Hahn. W - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

After a forced shutdown and restart it charged the battery without overheating. Seems strange that fixed it, but it worked!!!
