Have an external DVD drive plugged into a USB port on the dock, not on the Surface.

The Surface does not show the drive.

How do I get the Surface to detect the external drive?

    Hi Roy,

A single USB connection to your docking station may not be enough to power the DVD drive. There are external DVD drives that require a separate power source to be functional. Some drives have a separate power port where you can plug in a power adapter or a USB power cable. In case you have a drive that has only one port, get a USB Y-cable or a USB hub.
