how to open a new tab?

How do I open a tab in a new window? When already in a window, typically you can hit control and hit the link you wish tp ooen and it will open in a new tab. However, this is not working with my surface. How do I do this?

    Click in the link with your finger and hold it there until you see sort kind of rectangle coming from under your finger. Lift your finger in that moment and you will see a menu from where you can pick open in a new tab.

    It should work with the Surface.  Are you using the full screen "modern" Internet Explorer, or the desktop version?  Does the problem exist in both, or just one?
