I bought my new Surface Laptop 3 about two weeks ago and I have noticed when it is plugged in charging the charger gets extremely hot. I have nothing else plugged in to the laptop and I don't live anywhere near a microsoft store in the UK. Can I do anything about this?

    Hi, Amelia2222!

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your concerns regarding the Surface Laptop 3 charger.

Please allow us to ask these questions:

-May we know if this just happened recently or has it been this way since you purchased it?

-Does it happen on any wall outlet?

-Is this the charger that came in with the device?

-Do you see any cable damage/fray?

To initially troubleshoot the issue, please do these steps:

Disconnect the charger and check connections. This resets the charger and verifies all connections are secure. Dirt or debris on the connector’s pins could be preventing a power connection.

1.) Unplug the power connector from side of device

2.) Unplug the charger from the wall outlet

3.) Check that the power cord is securely attached to the PSU

4.) Unplug any USB devices from the charge port on the PSU (Not available on all PSUs)

5.) Wipe the pins on the power connector with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth (microfiber cloths work great)

6.) Plug the PSU back into the wall outlet. If possible, try a different wall outlet.

7.) Plug the power connector back into side of device

    Check for Windows Update:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates

Please restart your device to apply the updates.

Let us know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Janette_Z

    Hello Janette Z and Amelia2222,

I have to comment that there seems to be a significant problem with the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 power supply and/or Microsoft Surface Laptop 3's ......... There is "overheating" occurring with the power supply brick as well as the computer which happens when charging the computer.

The overheating is MUCH worse (scorching HOT) when the computer is being used while it is charging BUT the computer also overheats as well as the power supply when the computer has been SHUT DOWN via the Windows emblem at the lower left corner of the screen.

I ended up receiving a replacement computer and it seems I may still have the same problem.  I hope that the last time I charged my laptop that the overheating was due to the Windows update.
