Locked out of my Suface Book at log in (local password)

Hello,

Hoping someone can help...

I had tried several times over the last few days to update to the Windows Anniversary edition on my Surface Book (that I've only had for a few Months). The updates continued to fail so I thought I'd try booting into safe mode and run the install from there.

I just typed msconfig (like I used to do years ago) and selected safe mode from the menu. I didn't select "apply" because I didn't want it to stick for more than one boot. The machine booted to the log in screen showing my user name and email address like normal but fails with a 'wrong user name or password" error when I enter my password.

I've only ever set up one local account and have a very simple log in password that I have never changed. I really don't want to do a factory reset. Any way out of this mess?

Thanks,

Mike

    Hi.

You can try the two-button shutdown. You can follow these steps:

Step 1: Press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds and then release it.
Step 2: Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds and then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.
Step 3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.
Step 4: Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,

    Erwin
