    Hi, Ashish Saraf

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

The mode of your Surface is switched automatically. It is in laptop mode with the Surface keyboard attached, and Windows 11 automatically switches to tablet mode when the keyboard is unplugged.

If you would like to use laptop mode when not using the Microsoft keyboard, this is currently not possible. We suggest you give us feedback on this great idea and we will take your comments into consideration:

    1. Go to Contact Us - Microsoft Support
    2. Choose how you would like to get support for your Surface device.
    3. Type in the problem you need help with.
    4. Look at any available solutions offered and select Contact Support.

Is your external display unrecognizable in the setup? or is it something else, sorry I don't understand it very well, please take a picture of your external screen's fault (mosaic for private information please) and add a description, thanks.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Thanks Huon !

    1. What is getting changed when i am not using Microsoft keyboard ? What is different in tablet mode vs desktop mode ?

will surface pro applications / other programs like vs code, work differently (i mean different option get active on UI etc. ) if i am not using Microsoft keyboard ?

What will i miss if i don't use Microsoft keyboard ?

    1. I am connecting to external display using thunderbolt port, When I project (Windows + P ) on my monitor using duplicate option it do not cover my entire screen on monitor, it looks like tablet ; however "Second screen only" option works fine.

    Thanks,

    Ashish

You can refer to the following link for details about the characteristics of the flatbed model:

    Tablet mode | Microsoft Learn

Your external monitor cannot cover the whole screen, it may be because the resolution of your external monitor is larger than the resolution of your Surface screen, you set the display mode of the external monitor to "Tile", which may require you to find the official driver of the external monitor to re-install, or update the driver package of the Surface. Install the official Surface driver package, all Surface model driver package URL: Download drivers and firmware for Surface - Microsoft Support (System version query: Start menu - Settings - System - About - Windows specifications - Version) to download the corresponding driver package.

I hope the above information can help you. If my understanding is wrong, please point it out to me so that I can assist you better.
