Touchpad going wild Surface laptop

My Surface laptop suddenly has the cursor moving all over the screen clicking on things out of my control. Sometimes the screen will go dark or revert to a random settings page. The screen still works for me to scroll w my finger, but the second I begin using the touchpad, the computer goes haywire until I restart it.

Super frustrated. This was expensive and only three years old. I tried updating the touchpad driver, it says it’s updated. Nothing spilled on the computer. It just suddenly happened one day.

How can I fix this?

    Hello Rams767,

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry to learn about this issue on your device. We'll do our best to help.

May I know if your device is AMD or Intel? Does this issue happen after an update or just while using the device? Have you noticed any physical damage on the touchpad?

In the meantime, please also check if issue occurs in UEFI or not. See How to use Surface UEFI (microsoft.com). If issue does occur in UEFI, then we suggest to contact our support via Contact Us Microsoft Support to seek options for your device and for further assistance. You can also contact them via phone, see Global Support Phone Numbers. For detailed instructions on how to contact our support, click here.

Otherwise, if problem does not occur in UEFI, try these methods:

    1. Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check for Windows Update. Ensure all pending updates are installed.
    2. Uninstall touch driver. Open Device Manager. Locate and expand Human Interface Devices. Right-click on HID-Compliant Touch Screen and select Uninstall. If there is more than one driver, uninstall those as well. Then, right-click on Intel(R) Precise Touch Device and select Uninstall. Restart your device.
    3. Manually install drivers and firmware for Surface Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by typing winveron the search barnear the Windows logo. Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface**,**choose (your Surface model) then click Download.
Choose the .msi file closest to your current OS Build and click Next.
After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.
    4. Run the System File Checker in Windows (microsoft.com).

Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to respond on this thread if there's anything else that needs to be addressed.

    Kind regards,

    StevenK
