Battery 1 on surface book won’t charge at all

So my battery 1 will not charge at all... I’ve tried everything so far. Uninstalled the drivers, reset the battery settings in the command prompt, restarted my computer, updated it, and even manually released the tablet and plugged in the charger directly but nothing works. The battery icon shows it detects the charger but always says 0% or jumps to a smaller percentage and back down again and then shuts down the tablet. Is there any way to fix this?

    Hi, Rhivinde!

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We understand you have issues with the clipboard as it will not receive a charge. As you know, the batteries in the Surface Book may charge at different rates, depending on the power state of each battery. Whichever battery has less than 20% charge will be charged first. When both batteries are at 20%, the clipboard will charge to 85%, and then both batteries will charge to 100%.

May we know if you are using the charger that came in with the device?

Since the battery never charges above 50%, please check for the Battery Limit settings.

    1. Boot to UEFI and select Boot Configuration.
    2. Check if Battery Limit is enabled.
    3. Disable Battery Limit.

Please also force a shutdown and restart your Surface.

    1. Press and hold the power button until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release the power button.
    2. Press and release the power button to turn your device back on. You should see the Surface logo.

If that doesn't work, use this two-button shutdown process to make sure your Surface turns off completely:

    1. Press and hold the power button on your Surface until the screen turns off (about 30 seconds), then release it.
    2. Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time until the screen turns off (about 15 seconds), then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds. 3. After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds. 4. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

Once they have been completed, please shutdown the device. Allow it to charge for about 45 minutes before turning back on.

    We hope this helped.

    Sincerely,

    Janette_Z

Unfortunately neither of these worked. I am using the cord that came with the device. Also, my battery 2 is 100% charged and will charge but my battery 1 will not. Even when I have battery 2 charging it will occassionally jump between percentages.

    Hello there, Rhivinde!

Thanks for updating us here in Microsoft Community. It is likely hardware-related. One last thing to do is to reset the device.

Check these 3 forms of Reset below:

    Fresh Start:

Fresh Start is the least intrusive form of reset.

You will not lose any files or personal information.

You will need to reinstall desktop programs.

Fresh Start also ensures you have has all available updates once complete.

If there is an issue with Windows itself, the issue may still occur after a Fresh Start.

    Reset from Within Windows:

This option uses the devices Hard Drive Partition to reimage the device.

This option can delete personal data (You can choose Keep my files or Remove everything).

You will need to reinstall desktop apps.

You will need to run updates upon completion.

If there is an issue with the partition, the issue may still occur after the reset.

    USB Recovery:

This option reimages the entire device, including the partition on the hard drive.

It is the most complete form of reset.

You will need to back up your personal data.

You will need to reinstall desktop apps. You will need to run updates after completion.

If the issue occurs after a reset, then the root cause is very likely hardware related.

You will need to download and set up a recovery image on a USB drive. Open USB recovery link to get started. The information on what size and type of drive is provided at the destination page.

Let me know how it goes and if it is not possible, please update me so we can suggest where you can get a replacement for this.

    Kind regards,
