Microsoft Surface Book shuts down when being opened

Question

Hello,

We have a Microsoft Surface Book 2 that seems to shut itself down when we open the laptop. For example, last night I closed the Surface without shutting it down. When I opened it the next day it displays the blue Windows screen "Shutting down". Then we have to wait until it shuts down just to boot it up again. We already looked at the logs, they only said "Windows has been shut down unexpectedly".

The Microsoft Surface is still running Windows 10 and is fully up to date. The device did not have this behaviour before.

May I know when did this issue started?

What version of Windows 10 are you on? On the search box type Winver and hit the enter key.

Any third party software installed on the device?

Did this happen while on battery or the charger is plugged in?

For the meantime, you may try to follow these steps below.

Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and make sure all updates are installed including optional updates.

Run the system file checker to check if there are corrupted system files that are just looping around causing this kind of issue to exist. 

Scan for virus, spyware, or other malware - these are known cause of performance issues on a device.

Use Windows Defender to update definitions and scan.

Perform a Memory Diagnostic

From Search, type Memory Diagnostic and run the Windows Memory Diagnostic program.

If none of these steps work, proceed to reset your device to your appropriate choice. See: Restore or reset Surface for Windows - Microsoft Support.

Thank you for your reply!

I'm sorry, this machine is running Windows 11 with the new 22H2 version. We unfortunately do not know when this issue started, although we're sure that it was happening before 22H2 too.

The last time this happened we closed the laptop while the charger was plugged in, then we unplugged it and put it in its bag. A day later we plugged it back in and opened it, it started shutting down immediately.

Any advice is appreciated!

Does it make any changes after performing the above steps? Change Power Options in Control panel.

1. In the Search bar, search for the Control Panel.
2. Select View and in the drop down menu, select eitherLarge or Small icons.
3. Select Power Options.
4. Click onChoose what closing the lid does on the left-hand side.
5. Locate the When I close the lid option on the window.
6. Click the drop-down menu for On battery.
7. Select theDo Nothing option.
8. Do the same for the Plugged in option.
9. Click the Save changes button at the bottom.

Hello Lavenia,

We're sorry you did not hear from us immediately, we were testing the possible solutions. Unfortunately the laptops till seems to shut down randomly whenever we open the lid.
