Why did my Surface Pro X keyboard stop charging the pen?

Question

A couple months ago, I noticed that my pen stopped charging. Was not sure if it was an issue with the pen or the keyboard so I bought a new pen and that still did not charge. I have had this laptop for a couple years now and this has been the first issue to arise. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry to know that your Surface Pro X keyboard no longer charges the pen.

A firmware update is required for your Surface Pro X Signature keyboard when charging your Slim pen.

Here's how to do the firmware update:

1. Attach the keyboard to your Surface.
2. Place your pen in the charging area.
3. Select Start> Settings> Windows Updates> Check for updates, then install any available updates.
4. Keep your accessory connected until the update finishes. You might need to restart your PC.
