Why does surface randomly go onto sleep mode while i'm using it?

My tablet has developed an annoying problem.

It will randomly go into sleep mode while I'm actually using it.

Usually happens if I'm using internet explorer. While I could be browsing any website and even typing like I am now the screen can go black. I then have to press the windows button on the tablet a few times to wake it up again which takes me to the windows login screen.

This is really annoying me now. I'm wondering if it could be caused by the touch cover 2 I received recently.

So could the new touch cover be causing this problem or do you think my tablet could be faulty?

    Greetings Malacath,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with unintended sleep mode on your Surface RT.

We have some questions regarding your issue.  Does it occur while using any other applications beyond Internet Explorer?  Does this happen when you are plugged in, running on battery power, or both?  Have you installed all available updates for your Surface RT?  Have you customized the power options in any way?

Please let us know this information.

    Hello Malacath

Are you still experiencing this?  Does it happen more often with the Cover attached or detached?  Any additional details you can add?

    Best regards

    Sorry for delay in replying.

It happens in battery mode even when fully charged and so far its mostly when using internet explorer although i dont use other apps much. I never really use it while plugged in so dont know if that will be any different.

I have started removing the cover when using touch and so far it only does it when touch cover is connected.

Yes I have all updates including win 8.1. and no i havent customised the power option apart from increasing the time before going into sleep to try and fix this problem.

Just to add this is not the original touchcover. MS sent me a new one where the keys light up but didnt tell me why they sent it me so i assumed the old one had been recalled.

I will try going back to old touch cover to see if it still happens although I would prefer to keep using the new one.

Exactly the same problem here. Definitely related to the touch cover is folded back against the back of my surface rt. Has to do with the proximity of the cover to the back. In fact sometimes it comes back on as soon as I pull the cover away from the back.

I wondered if I went into the control panel and changed the behavior in "what happens when the lid closes". It made no difference.

My guess is that it is picking up the sensor for when the cover is closed on the front.

    Greetings Malacath,

Just to confirm, your Surface RT goes into sleep only when the Touch Cover is connected? Do you have it folded back, or are you actively using it when it goes to sleep?
