I used the pen around noon working in tablet mode in onenote. I put the pen away after use and closed surface pro as normal. In the evening I went to use the pen in onenote again, but it is not working. It is connected through bluetooth and works when I click the eraser and even when use the eraser on the screen. However, the writing part does not work. Touch screen still works fine and I have completed the necessary updates. I have rebooted the pen, disconnected from bluetooth then reconnected, and it still does not write. I HAVE HAD THIS FOR LESS THAN A MONTH. Please help.

    Hi MichaelB.is.pissed,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community.

Is the issue happening on OneNote only? Have you tried using the pen on other applications like Paint? Is it also having the issue?

Please try these steps to troubleshoot the issue: (please do this in exact order)

    1. While the Surface Pen is paired on your Surface Pro 7, open Device Manager.
    2. Click View on top and check Show hidden devices
    3. Expand Human Interface Devices> HID-compliant pen > Uninstall device

Surface pen settings > Uninstall device

**** Surface pen integration > Uninstall device

**** HID-Compliant touch screen > Uninstall device (if you see 2 of these drivers, uninstall both)

Intel (R) Precise Touch Device> Uninstall device

    1. Expand Firmware > Surface touch > Uninstall device
    2. Expand System devices > Surface pen pairing > Uninstall device

Surface Touch Servicing ML > Uninstall device

Note: If prompted with a checkbox stating "Delete the driver software for this device", leave it uncheck then hit Uninstall. Do this for all  drivers asked to uninstall

    1. Restart
    2. After Restart, check in Settings > Devices, if the Surface Pen is still paired on the device. If it is still paired, Removed and Add the Surface Pen again.
    3. Test the Surface Pen

Thank you for the reply Marrion,

So I uninstalled those devices that you said to, however, I did not find surface pen settings in the human interface devices nor did I find the surface pen pairing or the surface touch servicing ML in the system devices. I restarted my computer from there, then removed and re-paired the surface pen again, all to no avail. The pen is still able to pair with the computer and the computer recognizes the pen at least on the eraser side, however the actually tip and writing capacity is not available and not even being recognized. What are my follow-up options?

    Thank you,

    Michael B

I don't think this is a pen issue. This is a surface firmware issue. Are there any updates from Microsoft?

    Hi MichaelB.is.pissed,

Thank you for your response. Please do these steps to troubleshoot the issue further:

1: RunSurface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows Update

    2: Update drivers and firmware

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going to Settings > System > About.

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro 7 then click Download on the next page.

Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.

After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

If the issue persist after these steps, we recommend that you Contact Support to check for replacement options of your Surface pen.

    Kind Regards,

    Marrion Y.

I have the same exact problem with my pen on a Surface Go. I've had the pen for a little over a year. On 2/13 I tried the pen and discovered that it was working, but that didn't last long. The pen has stopped writing again, but the eraser works like a mouse pointer. It provides a hand pointer over hyperlinks and a text cursor over text. Due to the timing of when my pen stopped, started and again stopped working, I suspect this problem has something to do with Windows updates.
