I imagine what matters is the driver.  If you plug the receiver in does it find a driver for you? Another possible check would be Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center (MMKC).  If the Microsoft Wireless Mouse 1850 is supported by it you would be able to install MMKC and use its mousinfo.exe utility to test your mouse position and its buttons.  Also getting the MMKC installed for a particular Microsoft mouse product might get you a better driver than whatever was found for it initially.

    FYI

My question is can I connect Microsoft Wireless Mouse directly to a laptop without receiver.

That depends on the device and your computer.  E.g. the only possibility that I can think of is that the device would be a Bluetooth connection and so your computer would have to support Bluetooth and be able to see and pair with the device.

Some details would help.  Firstly, why are you asking about this?
