How should I turn off my Surface?

Just close the top?

Use the power button on the edge of the top?

Or use the power button in the "settings" section?

Personally, I almost never "turn off" my surface; I use the button on the top edge, which puts it to "sleep" in standby mode, but does not actually power it off (unless you hold it down for several seconds as opposed to just pressing it quickly, if you hold it down for several seconds I think it does power off). I feel that is the best solution, and battery life does not seem compromised much by putting it in standby as opposed to turning it off. If I feel I will not use it for an extended period (which is rarely the case), or want to refresh it for some reason, I will shut it off or restart it by going to settings and using that power button.  I like standby because the surface wakes almost instantly.

    Hope this helps.

I don't have any trouble turning it off, but I have a lot of trouble KEEPING it off. I like the Surface because it's easy to stuff in a small bag and go, but it turns on when the screen is touched accidentally, or the USB mouse / keyboard are touched, somehow.  It's driving me nuts ... because I get to where I'm going and the battery is run down. This seems to happen whether I put it to sleep or power it off completely.  How do I KEEP it off, until I press the top button?

Doesn't swiping in from the right lead you to the Power ikon if you want to switch off completely?

It does, but in my case, the Surface still turns back on when I don't want it to.
