Is it normal to get a different Device Name after rebooting my Surface Book 3?

Hi,

I restarted my Surface Book 3 and chose the option to back up my files into the Drive. Once it finished restarting it asked me to rename my device as an option. It did show my previous device name and accepted as is. The next day the when I logged back in, the device name was changed to another combination of letters. Example: DESKTOP - ABCDEF. The underlined portion is what changed.

Is this normal after doing a hard reset?

Thanks,

LP

    Hello lp-c,

Thank you so much for posting in Microsoft Community.

I appreciate you raising this concern and I understand that you have seen changes on the device name of your Surface.

Basically, it is not normal for the device name to change after a reboot or hard reset. The device name is usually set during the initial setup process and should remain the same unless you manually change it. However, it is possible that the device name was reset to its default name after the hard reset. You can try changing the device name again to see if it sticks.

To change the device name on your Surface Book 3, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Start menu and click on Settings.
    2. Click on System.
    3. Click on About.
    4. Click on Rename this PC.
    5. Enter the new name you want to use for your device.
    6. Click Next and then click Restart Now to apply the changes.

If this doesn't work, try resetting your Surface again and see if it helps.

Please let me know if this works.

    Best regards,

    Rolando S.

    Hi, thanks for the help.

I also decided to test a theory on another device (tablet) I had. I did a hard reset on the device 2 other times and the device name has also changed 2 different times from the very first one provided. Is this something new with doing hard resets on Microsoft devices ?

    Hello lp-c,

Thank you so much for the response.

I appreciate the effort and time you put into this. I would like to clarify and allow me to ask these questions:

    • When you said hard reset, are you referring to shutting down the Surface or totally resetting the device?
    • If you are doing a full reset to your Surface, is it "keep my files" option or "remove everything" option?

Hoping to hear back from you.

    Best regards,

    Rolando S.

    Hi,

I tried the hard reset as if I doing a factory reset, I chose the "remove everything" option.

    Hope this helps,

    LP
