    Hi Tom Grew,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community.

The USB port of the Surface Pro 6 is only for data transfer purposes. To connect an external monitor to the Surface Pro 6, you need to use its mini DisplayPort. Please see this page for more details: Troubleshoot connecting Surface to a second screen (microsoft.com).

    Kind regards,

Thanks Marrion. Do you know if the minidisplay port has power capacity too? I.e. would a minidisplay port to USBC lead work to project onto and power the portable monitor?

    Hi Tom Grew,

    Thank you for the response.

I'm sorry but no, the mini DisplayPort on the Surface Pro 6 won't be able to provide power to the portable monitor. Checking on the portable monitor specs though (ThinkVision M15 | 15.6" Mobile Monitor | 62CAUAR1US | Lenovo US), it has 2 USB-C ports. You'll probably need to use another USB-C cable going to the USB port of the power supply of the Surface which would provide 5volts @ 1amp=5 watts power to the monitor (Surface power supplies and charging requirements (microsoft.com)).

    Kind regards,

    Marrion
