My battery is draining too fast after Windows 11 update

Since some weeks ago, my battery (Surface Pro 6) is not working as it should. This came after my update to W11.

It used to last about 2-3h until 0%, but recently it only lasts about 30 minutes and, actually, last time it was only 10 minutes, save mode enabled.

I got in contact with the support team by chat, and the only answer was to reboot the OS by USB.

I have read in other threads that this is a common issue for many devices. What can I do?

    Hi DanielLlr,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you. Battery draining can be caused when too many applications are running in the background. A heavy application like gaming or other desktop app can also drain the battery. Or can be a faulty battery. I'll be asking few questions to help us isolate the problem.

May I know when was the Windows 11 update installed?

When you say reboot the OS by USB, do you mean you have performed the USB recovery image?

Were there other accessories connected to the device?

You may try to do the following steps below.

Check Task manager for apps that has high battery consumption, if there are apps that is not in used closed them.

Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and make sure all updates are installed including optional updates if available.

See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com)

To check for updates: Settings >> Windows updates >> Check for updates.

    Remove and reinstall battery driver.

From Device Manager, expand the Batteries category. Double-tap or double-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, select the Driver tab, and select Uninstall > OK.  Then restart your device.

Do clean boot: A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program. See How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support for the steps.

    Run Power troubleshooter

Settings >> System >> Troubleshoot >> Other troubleshooter >> Look for power and select Run.

Generate Battery report to check battery health.

Open Command prompt and run as administrator >> Click on Yes when a UAC prompt appears on the screen >> type the following command below and press Enter to generate battery report.

    powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery-report.html"

Once you complete the steps, the report will be saved automatically in the main installation drive. You can save the file to your Onedrive and share the link on your response.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

    Hello Lavenia,

    Thanks for the quick response.

I've been checking my task manager, reinstalling the drivers and running the toolkit, but I think the most interesting file for you to check here is my battery report, where it clearly shows the drainages for the recent past months.

    Your questions:

May I know when was the Windows 11 update installed? I made a mistake; the problem didn't start with the Windows 11 installation, but with the Windows 11 Version 22H2 update, on October 13th. You can see in the report that, after that week, the capacity and duration of the battery made a fall.

When you say reboot the OS by USB, do you mean you have performed the USB recovery image? Yes, but I didn't do it, since I read some people on the forums saying that it was not useful for them. Also, I wanted to check if it was a hardware issue.

Were there other accessories connected to the device? Only mouse, headphones and the keyboard.

    Thank you,

Oh, as the update was installed more than two months ago, it doesn't allow me to reinstall it back. :(
