1st Gen Surface Laptop: Unlock Encrypted BitLocker (all 4 partitions) and reinstall Windows

Hello all,

I would like to install Windows to the latest version on my Surface Laptop Gen 1 - unsuccessfully so far.

All recovery options given redirect me back to the option menu saying "something has gone wrong".

Tried a variety of BIOS settings, trying to install Windows via USB (unsuccessfully so far) and other methods.

I don't have any BitLocker Encryption or back up keys.

At this stage, I am thinking of wiping/formatting the main disk incl. partition but I am yet about to find a way how to do so - and install Windows from a bootable USB.

Various manual commands failed verification check etc.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am clueless...

    Hello BananaOverApple,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community. I understand how important for you to reinstall Windows on the device.

In this case, to wipe out everything including the partition, I'd highly suggest performing a USB recovery image. This option reimages the entire device, including the partition on the hard drive. It is the most complete form of reset.  You must have at least 16GB/32GB of USB Flash drive and it must be formatted to FAT32 prior to downloading the Recovery Image.

To proceed, thoroughly follow the procedures in Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface - Microsoft Support.

Let me know if that works. I'll wait for your response.

    Regards,

    StevenK
