How To Unpair Surface Pen

Hi,

My surface pen has suddenly started writing when I hold it as far as an inch away from the glass of my Surface Pro 4 tablet. After researching this issue and not finding any helpful tips, I'm trying to unpair and re-pair it to see if this helps. However, I deleted the pen from the recognizable devices in "Bluetooth & other devices" and it still works. I can even turn off Bluetooth and the pen still connects with the tablet.

After discovering this, I tried connecting the pen to my Windows 10 computer to see if that made it disconnect from my tablet. However, my computer now says it's connected to a Surface pen (and there's no other one in my vicinity), and my pen still doesn't work with the computer.

What's going on? How do I unpair my pen from my Surface? (Brownie points if you have any tips I haven't already seen about fixing the "air writing" issue!)

Thanks!

EDIT: I've noticed that pressing my pen's buttons DOES affect my laptop; it just doesn't do anything when I tap it on my touch screen. However, that might just be an issue with my 3-year-old HP Pavilion laptop. The pen is still connected with my tablet as well.

Actually, a pen does not need to be paired to write/draw, so your issue has

nothing to do with Bluetooth or pairing.

Can you borrow a friends Surface Pen to see if it has the same issue (do not

pair it). If you are in the US, go to the closest physical retail Microsoft

Store and they will help diagnose.

Are you having any issues with touch/multi touch using your fingers?

    Try the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

    Hi taylomo100,

The pen may not work if it is paired to another device. To un-pair the pen, go to Settings > Devices > select Surface pen and choose Remove device.

Also, the LED indicator can tell you the current status of the pen. Press and hold the top button for 5-7 seconds, then let the button go. If the LED light blinks continuous, that means the pen is receiving power and is trying to pair with a device. If the LED light blinks for 2-3 seconds, that means your pen is already paired to another device.

If that does not work, force shutdown and restart your Surface.

    1. Press and hold the power button for a full 10 seconds, until the screen turns off, then release the power button.

    Note

On some Surface models, the screen may immediately turn off when pressing the power button. If this happens, continue to hold for the full 10 seconds and then release. 2. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

If that doesn't work, use this two-button shutdown process to make sure your Surface completely turns off.

    1. Press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds and then release it.
    2. Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds and then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds. 3. After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds. 4. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

Let me know how the issue progresses. Similarly, if you have more questions, please inform me by replying to this post.
