I am upgrading from a Surface Pro 6 to a new Pro 9. I'd like to see if there is an easy way to transfer all programs and settings from the old to new Surface; not just Microsoft programs (Windows, Excel, etc), but all programs.

    Hello PaulRuzicka,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community. Way to go on your brand-new device. I understand how important for you to transfer your data and programs from your old device to your new device.

To move data or files unto your new device, you can use OneDrive instead of using an external hard drive. Please see Move your files to a new Windows PC (microsoft.com) for details.

For some apps and software installed from Microsoft Store, you can use Windows backup and sync settings. Check About Windows backup and sync settings (microsoft.com) for details.

For other applications though, especially third-party software, you'll have to install it manually on the new device.

I hope this clarifies your concern.

    Best regards,

    StevenK

One problem with using OneDrive is that OneDrive is also synced with my primary desktop computer. So when I sync OneDrive up with my new Surface Pro 9, I end up getting the desktop and other settings/preferences of the desktop on the Surface, which I do not want.

    Paul,

Change the OneDrive sync settings on the new computer:

    Thanks for getting back, PaulRuzicka.

I agree with Barb's suggestion. May I know if have you already tried it?

I look forward to your response.
