How can I get my SP8 Cover Type work again?

Hello everyone,

I have been using my SP8 and its cover type for two and a half years (bought in November 2021). Last week, after resuming the SP8 from sleeping mode, I noticed that the Cover Type would refuse to function when I had it "in flat mode," but it would work perfectly when I used it in the 'inclined mode', covering the lower bezel. I did not know, but that was a warning sign.

The next day, indeed, the Cover Type refused to work altogether. I have been reading several forum posts, including this one (Type Cover just stopped working on SP8 - Microsoft Community), and I tried pretty much everything, including:

  • cleaning the ports
  • updating the drivers and the Os
  • using the surface diagnostic toolkit
  • the rebooting (UEFI setting) when you use the power and volume buttons.

The surface app no longer detects the cover type as a device.

This situation greatly lowers my appreciation of new surface products because SP8 and its premium accessories are supposed to last.

Before I order another Cover Type, is there any fix (repair or other troubleshooting) I should consider?

    Hello Traore Kalilou,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I've read everything you've posted here, as well as the threads in the scheme you refer to.

To your credit, everything you've tried so far is correct and likely to work. But if neither fix the problem, then I might wonder if it's a hardware failure with Typer Cover.

Especially if you've tested Typer Cover in UEFI and noticed that it doesn't work properly in UEFI, it's time to send the device to the Surface support team to check and repair your Surface.

I can direct you to live support who can help you create a repair order:

    1. Use your personal Microsoft account (not your organization account) to access the following links:

    Contact - Microsoft Support

    1. Type Surface, press Enter, and click "Contact Support" at the bottom:

    1. Select Technical Support and select the device model you are currently using in Produce family, then click Confrim:

    1. You will see contact options for Chat support and Phone support, please contact them during working hours to suggest contact:

Finally, please allow me to give a kind reminder. Currently, some users feedback that Chat Support may not be able to contact real-time support, and will encounter errors, so I recommend you to try Phone Support first.

I wish you all the best.

    Best Regards,

Mitchell | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
