Microsoft Surface Laptop Touchpad not clicking

Hi,

We recently purchased a Microsoft Surface Laptop and today the touchpad is having issues left clicking and right clicking.  I am able to move the cursor around the screen just fine and the cursor changes when there is a clickable link but pressing the lower left or lower right corners does nothing.

I checked the settings in Windows 10 for the touchpad and reset to default.  It was there I noticed that the 2 finger and 3 finger swiping wasn't working either.  I installed the latest drivers and it still does not work after a restart.

I ran the Surface Diagnostic Tool located at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4037239/surface-fix-common-surface-problems-using-surface-diagnostic-toolkit but it found no issues.

    Hello Alex1178,

We are sorry to hear you are having issues with your Surface Laptop and it's trackpad not registering clicks!  This is certainly not something we want you to experience!

There are a few questions, though, to help us narrow down what is going on.  Can you tell us if this started after an update, installing an app, or any other factor that might coincide with the issue happening?

Running the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit was certainly a good thing to do, so thumbs up for that.

You may try removing the keyboard drivers and restarting.  To do this, hold the Windows key on the keyboard and hit X.  In the menu, select Device Manager.  Once there, in the list expand Keyboards.  You can safely select any you see there and hit the X at the top to remove it after selection.  Once done, simply reboot and the drivers will re-install on their own.  Test the trackpad and see if clicks are now being registered and lets us know!

    Regards,

    Tracy B.

    Hi Tracy,

I uninstalled all the drivers and once they reinstalled the issue was the same.  I did notice something strange, when I tilt the laptop towards me the touchpad starts working normally.  When I sit it flat down on the desk again. it stops working again.

    Thanks,

    Alex
