My screen popped out on my surface pro 4 recently. Is this safe to still use? At first I thought one of my kids dropped it or something but it just got worse. For now I turned it off and unplugged it but I use this often. What can be done?

    Hi JenManis,

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear about the screen issue on your Surface device. May I confirm if there are bulging parts on the screen when put on a flat Surface? If there are, the issue could be caused by a bulging battery.

We recommend checking the Surface devices in the Microsoft website which offers an updated hardware specifications (which are mostly needed now a days.) since the out of warranty offers for Surface Pro 4 have been discontinued.

It doesn't lay completely flat :( I can't see a huge bulge or anything but if I lay it flat it rocks slightly. I really need to know if it's just a screen coming unglued or if it could be a hazard in my home.

This an early signs of Bulging battery. Please check the Caring for battery in Surface article at https://support.microsoft.com/help/4571474/, it states:

When batteries experience excessive deterioration, you may see severe battery life reductions or advanced expansion of the lithium-ion cells. Under normal conditions, Surface devices are designed with a mechanical enclosure to contain battery expansion. Under extreme conditions the battery may expand beyond the mechanical limits of the device and result in deformation.

Battery expansion from deterioration does not present a safety concern and is most often caused by the formation of non-flammable carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. If you have a device where the battery has expanded visibly beyond the mechanical enclosure, we recommend you stop using the device. You should handle the device with caution to prevent putting pressure on or risk puncturing the battery cell.

My screen did the same thing. I only noticed because the screen was flickering. Screen on one end was bulging and warm. I did not want to have screen warp, so I went online to see how to separate screen from computer. The info if found was good, but the screen by this time was very warm and when trying to break the glued seal it cracked the plastic. The center of the screen there is something that looks liking packing that had bulged out keeping the center of the screen from lying flat. I assume this is part of the battery and the failing battery is the problem.

I unplugged the screen and tried to clear the shards of plastic. Wondering if the computer still works plugged it back in. Everything works fine except the screen is not flat and camera is blocked.

My surface Pro 4 is 2016 and I wonder if fixing this is financially practical. I am assuming the issue was a battery problem which is odd because I retired shortly after purchasing this and it is attached to power 99% of time. I have found the screen is available to purchase that is not a crazy price. I am assuming I should probably replace the battery as well

My husband found a replacement battery for $70. He is going to attempt to replace it and the glue around my screen. Thankfully my screen isn't cracked, yet. I was reading about the batteries and apparently keeping them plugged in for extended periods ruins them faster :( Mine stays plugged in for the most part too. There is a whole screen replacement kit on Amazon as well. For me it's not in the budget to just upgrade mine right now so we're going to attempt the battery replacement.
