Silverstone MS-12 not recognised over USB-A

Good day everyone,

I have a Silverstone MS12 with a 4TB SSD inside; the device is correctly recognised by a desktop over both USB-A 3.0 and USB-C ports and an older laptop with just USB-A ports (both 2 and 3.0 versions).

When I plug it into a Surface Book 3's USB-C port the MS12 works just fine.

If I plug it into any of the USB-A ports, the device doesn't show up in resource manager, but it gets recognised as an USB device and it's listed under the "Safely Remove USB Devices" icon in the taskbar. However, unmounting the device from there doesn't do anything, I don't get any success or failure prompts.

I've tried connecting the MS12 to the base's two USB-A ports, the USB port on the charger, and the USB ports on the official docking station. Same situation.

I'd happily use the MS12 over USB-C, but I need that port for an external monitor when I don't have access to the docking station.

Any ideas how to get the device working from all USB ports?

Thank you.

It probably requires a powered USB HUB for the USB A ports. Surface historically has not had enough power over USB-A for some peripherals.

But not even the power supply or the docking station are able to deliver enough power over USB-A?

Definitely not the port on the power brick. And it sounds like the dock also has a power problem.
