external display video: no sound, images play at high speed

I sometimes hook up my Suface Pro X to a 4k tv. It looks great, very nice on the eyes and helps me do work.

What I noticed: when attempting to watch a recent live stream, there was no sound and it played the video very rapidly. I took it to another TV (1080p) and it behaved the same. So we made another plan and found a workaround to watch the live stream.

A few days later when connected via hdmi I noticed the same behavior when playing YouTube videos via browser: no sound, fast playback.

  • Tests:
  1. I changed dongles (I have 3 USB C - hdmi)
  2. I played the same video on the same TV on my Surface Pro 4 with no problems (MS display dongle)
  3. I played YouTube with a different PC hooked up to the 4k tv with USB C-hdmi dongle. No problems with sound or speed of playback.
  4. Surface X plays YouTube fine when not displaying on the TV

I think that I can safely rule out the hdmi cable as the issue, though I did not specifically test it, it was a different cable for the 1080p tv.

Same behavior for 4k/1080p TVs so I don't think that it is the TV.

I don't suspect the dongles. They worked fine for other devices.

Maybe it is something to do with Flash/FLV files, but since playback worked fine on other devices?

I think it is the X factor by which I mean that I suspect it is ARM in some way or some other related peculiarity of programming or hardware.

I am not stopped dead in my tracks with this issue, so I'm not panicked, but I am curious about it (it is a surprising pattern) and glad to raise it as an issue for the Surface Pro X team to tackle because it seems to me that it ought to function normally.

    Hello reydesapos,

Thanks for reaching out Microsoft Community and posting your concern here.

As we all know, Surface Pro X outputs display and audio via USB-C port, so we recommend using USB-C to HDMI adapter with a HDMI 2.0 cable or higher. When HDMI connections can also transmitaudio signals, we also recommend you use Microsoft’s USB-C adapters on the devices equipped with the USB-C port. For more info, see Troubleshoot connecting Surface to a second screen and Surface sound, volume, and audio accessories, and Connect Surface to a TV, monitor, or projector.

If this answers your question, please let our Community know by marking this post as an answer. Otherwise, don't hesitate to respond to this thread if there’s anything else that needs to be addressed.

    Kind regards,

    StevenK
