I sometimes hook up my Suface Pro X to a 4k tv. It looks great, very nice on the eyes and helps me do work.
What I noticed: when attempting to watch a recent live stream, there was no sound and it played the video very rapidly. I took it to another TV (1080p) and it behaved the same. So we made another plan and found a workaround to watch the live stream.
A few days later when connected via hdmi I noticed the same behavior when playing YouTube videos via browser: no sound, fast playback.
- I changed dongles (I have 3 USB C - hdmi)
- I played the same video on the same TV on my Surface Pro 4 with no problems (MS display dongle)
- I played YouTube with a different PC hooked up to the 4k tv with USB C-hdmi dongle. No problems with sound or speed of playback.
- Surface X plays YouTube fine when not displaying on the TV
I think that I can safely rule out the hdmi cable as the issue, though I did not specifically test it, it was a different cable for the 1080p tv.
Same behavior for 4k/1080p TVs so I don't think that it is the TV.
I don't suspect the dongles. They worked fine for other devices.
Maybe it is something to do with Flash/FLV files, but since playback worked fine on other devices?
I think it is the X factor by which I mean that I suspect it is ARM in some way or some other related peculiarity of programming or hardware.
I am not stopped dead in my tracks with this issue, so I'm not panicked, but I am curious about it (it is a surprising pattern) and glad to raise it as an issue for the Surface Pro X team to tackle because it seems to me that it ought to function normally.
