Surface Pro Keyboard suddenly stopped working

Hi all,

About a week after I finally took the plunge and installed Windows 11, my surface keyboard just suddenly stopped working. Occasionally I get a prompt box telling me that the USB device isn't recognised but other than that, I don't really know what to do. Any advice or fixes??

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Thank you for posting your inquiry here in Microsoft Community, BenThorpe1.

I'm sorry to hear that your Surface Type cover stopped responding. I will do my best to assist.

    • Check for errors on the device manager. Go to search and search for device manager > Expand all drivers and look for exclamation point > If there's an error, right-click the driver then choose uninstall then restart the device.

    - Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows Update.

    • Run the System File Checker.
    • Install drivers package. Check the specific OS build of your Windows SettingsSystemAboutDownload the driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro device that you are using and click download on the next page. Please choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. After the download, runand installthe .msi then Restart the Surface Device.

    - Boot to the UEFI settings. UEFI environment is outside the Windows system so any issues that persists on the UEFI could be potential hardware issues. Go to settings > Update & Security > Under Advanced Start up , click on Restart Now, once you're on the UEFI settings, Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Choose the Command Prompt > Type "notepad" > on the notepad, test the keys that are not working and see if it works or not while on the UEFI.

Let me know how this goes by replying on this thread.

I was having the same issues. I went down to the UEFI settings. I noticed my caps lock light and Function key light did work. I restarted back into windows, and I seem to have my Surface Pro 6 keyboard back. Great, because I was about to purchase a replacement! Is this just a hardware anomaly that is occurring at Windows 11 with the Surface Pros?
