I want to have a business email tied to my azure hosted domain, I signed up for microsoft business and when i signed up, I had to create a onmicrosoft.com account. But my azure is associated with my outlook.com. Once I signed up it said i had to add an dns recordset. I added it, but when i tried to verify it failed. The error said that domain was associated to another account. So I ended the new microsoft business account. I tried again and since my onmicrosoft.com existed, I had to create another onmicrosoft.com and I got the same results. I have no idea what recordset my dns is tied to and i have 3 microsoft email accounts. I just want to delete the onmicrosoft accounts and find some way to associate my outlook.com to a microsoft 365 business account so i can have a business email.

    Hello,

    Step-by-Step Fix

    1. Check Which Tenant Owns Your Domain

Your domain is likely still associated with a previous Microsoft 365 tenant. To find out which one:

    • Go to Microsoft 365 Admin Center and try logging in with each of your Microsoft accounts.
    • Once logged in, go to Settings > Domains and check if your domain is listed.
    • If you find it, remove the domain from that tenant.

If you can’t access the tenant that owns the domain, you’ll need to contact Microsoft 365 support to release the domain.

    1. Clean Up Extra Tenants

You mentioned creating multiple onmicrosoft.com tenants. These can be deleted, but only if:

    • You remove all users (except the global admin),
    • Remove all subscriptions and custom domains,
    • Then go to Azure Portal > Azure Active Directory > Delete Directory.

Repeat this for each unused tenant.

    1. Set Up Microsoft 365 Business with Your Domain

    Once your domain is released:

    • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center with the account you want to use.
    • Go to Settings > Domains > Add Domain.
    • Follow the DNS verification steps (TXT record in Azure DNS).
    • Once verified, assign the domain to your users and set up email (Exchange Online).
    1. Link Azure DNS to Microsoft 365

If your domain is hosted in Azure DNS:

    • Go to Azure Portal > DNS Zones.
    • Add the required TXT, MX, CNAME, and SRV records as shown in the Microsoft 365 setup wizard.

Use Your Outlook.com Account for Admin

You can’t convert a personal @outlook.com account into a Microsoft 365 admin, but you can:

    • Add it as a guest user in your Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD),
    • Or create a new user in your Microsoft 365 tenant and assign it Global Admin rights.

Here’s the official Microsoft link that walks you through adding and verifying a custom domain in Microsoft 365:

    Hello Martial Arts InterNetwork,

Thank you for connecting with me offline over the Teams call.

As discussed, we understand that your custom domain was already verified in one of your Entra directories where you initially signed up using an Outlook account. Since you have another Entra directory associated with your business, you wanted to verify the same custom domain in that directory.

To accomplish this, we first removed the domain verification from the original tenant where the Outlook account was used. Then, we logged into your business tenant and successfully verified the custom domain by adding the required TXT records on your domain's DNS.

    Add your custom domain name
