How to Create a System Restore Point in Windows 10

Hello,

I just installed a new SSD in my Laptop Asus K571GT. (C drive SSD, D Drive HDD) However, before that, I would do a regular backup of my laptop. Always on the 1st and 15th of every month, to an external HDD.

I also remembered that there's a system restore point I could use in the event something happens, I could "turn back time" to that point without the use of backups, should an application or drive severely crash the computer. I watched videos of how to create a system restore point and it looks very simple, but in the videos, it shows if I create a restore point today, (July 4th, 2025), and my computer crashes say March 2027, the restore point would be to today, no?

Is it possible to automatically decide where and when system restore points occur?
To set a restore point every 2 weeks? Or monthly?
Having a system restore point older than 6 months, to me, would be counter-intuitive...
Thanks!

You can create it either manually or on schedule.

    On schedule

You wouldn't be able to use a system restore point for today if the system crashed in say 2027. Windows will make restore points automatically as time goes on and will only keep them for a certain amount of time. If there is a feature update (24H2 to 25H2) then restore points from 24H2 will be removed.

They are not a replacement for a backup routine.

System restore can help roll back to a previous date if something should go wrong but don't rely on them long term.
