I want to upgrade to Windows 11, but my current CPU is Intel Core i3-6100, which does not meet minimum requirement for Windows 11 update. I'm wondering if I should get a new CPU and replace it myself. However, if I change my CPU, I might need to change my motherboard as well, which is an OEM version, online sources seem to say that I cannot transfer my Windows license to a new motherboard, is that true? What is my best course of action here?

Hello my name is Jonathan, I'm here to help you.

To upgrade to Windows 11, you will need a processor from the 8th generation or newer, which your current motherboard socket does not support. Therefore, you will need to replace both the CPU and the motherboard. Since the Windows OEM license is tied to the motherboard, it is not transferable, so you will need to purchase a new Windows license.
