What are the repercussions of signing out of a previous microsoft account?

I recently renewed my windows license. But I did so with a different microsoft account, although this was done on the same computer. But I'm having huge problems accessing word files and opening them. If I sign out of the former account, will such an action solve my problems? What are the repercussions of such a step?

Are you talking about a Microsoft 365 account you have renewed. If that is the case then you need to sign-in to the Office apps using the account used to buy the licence.

I believe I was using a different account/email address. Being clueless about such matters, I thought I could just make a new account and renew my license. Am i incorrect

If you made a new account then you bought a new licence. You didn't renew the existing one, that would be on the previous account. Usually a 365 licence renews automatically unless you cancel it. Were you using a licence on a previous account for Microsoft 365?
