Swtor causing the Cpu to run at 100%

I have a Duo E8500 3.16 processor and am running Windows 10 build 10565. When I start Swtor The cpu starts running at 98%, Swtor is using between 86-94% according to Task manager. Everything else seems to be running fine on my computer. I haven't tried installing anymore games yet. I also read the article about the sound driver causing this problem with games so I disabled the sound. This didn't solve the problem. I ran Swtor on another system with a Duo E8500 3.0 processor with Windows 10 (not in the insider program) and it uses between 40-60% of the cpu. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hello Scott,

Thank you for posting your concern here in Microsoft Community and welcome to the window 10 Family.

From the description provided, I understand that you are facing slow performance gaming issues after upgrading to Windows 10.

Before proceeding, please check for the amount of hard disk space remaining, as the available free space is also responsible for Windows to run at optimal level of performance. Also, ensure to install any pending updates and also update all device drivers from Device Manager.

Now please follow the below methods and check for the results.

    Method 1

    • Place the computer in a Clean Boot state and check if there are any third party applications to be causing the slow down during you play the mentioned game.

    1.  To disable all non-Microsoft services consult the article called Clean Boot

    Follow: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, refer to this section "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting"

Disclaimer: A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot. You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot. Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality when you perform a clean boot. When you start the computer normally, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or experience the original behavior if the problem still exists. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps.

    2.  To disable any 3^rd^ party unwanted startup programs in Windows 8 and above, follow: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/20119.how-to-enable-or-disable-startup-programs-in-windows-8.aspx

(Applies to Windows 10 as well)

    • Try Autorun and disable any start-up programs you don't need.

    Download Autorun: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

    Method 2

I suggest you to run the System Maintenance troubleshooter. and see if it helps.

    Follow the below steps:

    1.      Type troubleshooting in the search bar.

    2.      Select Troubleshooting.

    3.      Select View all on the top left corner.

    4.      Click on System Maintenance.

    5.      Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

Hope the above information was helpful. If you need further assistance, please do let us know and we would be happy to help you further.

    Thank You.

Hi this is what I found. When I look at the driver details it says ATI Radeon 4800 "No driver files are required or loaded for this device". When I did a clean install it shows about 10 drivers in the driver details. For normal use the video driver is fine but when I play SWTOR it runs a max 96%-100% CPU. I can't keep the clean install because I started the Insider program with windows vista, and it won't activate when I reload windows 10 over my current build, and when I use reset this pc, it fails at 53% every time. I tried removing the drivers and restarting but it doesn't help. My build is 10565 but the problem was probably from a previous build. Any ideas would be welcome. I have also moved this to the drivers section.

Hey Scott, were you able to resolve your problem? Have you been able update SWTOR to 4.0.1 and launch successfully? I've had somewhat sluggish performance in SWTOR at times but the latest patch seems to prevent me from running it altogether.

I've checked task manager and I've seen Background Task Host and Runtime Broker processes with high disk usage, wondering if you had similar experience.

Hey Paul, I have my SWTOR working last time I checked. I haven't been playing right now but I downloaded the last update and just checked it with task manager and everything seemed fine while I ran around and shot a few things which wasn't the case before. I was able to remove the video driver and reload one that someone said worked before the final build. I also had a problem downloading earlier that was caused by Kapersky anti virus. Once I removed it (disabling didn't help) and started using Windows Defender it started downloading with no problems. The only thing I can think of right now that might be causing your problem if the other 2 things didn't help is your disk space. Is there enough room left on your disk drive? Hope this helps, If not see if you can find any other apps that aren't working correctly. Also make sure your computer is able to run the SWTOR minimum specifications. Good Luck.

So you are saying that a 4% increase in a games CPU load concerns you when having it use 86-94% before does not?
