Reinstall OS After CPU Upgrade?

This might be a very dumb question but I just have to ask, thanks.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 640 server running Server 2019, latest patches installed, firmware, drivers etc. installed. I recently added a second CPU and 64G of RAM to it. No matter what I do, the server will not pickup the second CPU. I have swapped CPUs, replaced motherboard, replaced both CPUs and still, the OS only picks up 1 CPU. Do I have to reinstall the OS by any chance in order to pickup the second CPU?

Thanks.

I do see slot 2 populated with no information

Then the operating system will not change this. No, the OS does not need reinstalled. In the days of NT the hall.dll needed to be replaced with a multi-processor DLL, but no more. You can add the processor or processors. When you restart the computer, Plug and Play detects and installs the processor or processors. I'd contact dell support or try asking for help in dell forums for problems with the hardware.

@Anonymous , thanks for the Dell link. I have an open case with Dell and I know this is most likely a hardware issue. I just wanted to ask from an OS perspective the Windows Server 2019 has to be reinstalled when there's a CPU upgrade. I don't believe so, someone in my team asked me and I just wanted to find the answer. There's so much more to the story than just the question I asked.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

OS doesn't need to be reinstalled after CPU upgrade.

    replaced motherboard

This action will result in an inactive OS. The way to reactive your OS depends on how your PC is licensed.

I am sure I have some sort of hardware issue.

Agreed with you, this is a hardware issue. We have to resolve hardware issue before we do further troubleshooting. Please contact Dell for help about hardware.
